Appalachian Basket Weaving - God's Eye

  Appalachian Basket Weaving

God's Eye - Red/White Basket

My daughter and I took an Appalachian Basket Weaving class at the Knoxville Crafts and Art Center. We had a blast! Basket weaving is an amazing craft. I really enjoyed the class and learning how to make a basket.

I'm Still Obsessed

 I'm Still Obsessed

... with Red/White Quilts ...

How it usually begins ... I'm making binding for a red/white quilt that is ready to be bound or I'm sorting through the red/white scrap box of orphan blocks.

Just 11 more blocks to go.
This pattern is called Lilac Breeze by Amanda of
WestwoodAcresFabric.com

The finished quilt size will be 56 x 74 inches

The Red fabrics are from my fabric stash and the low volume fabrics come from previous quilt kits by Amanda that I have made.

Still Obsessed

 Still Obsessed

I do believe that red/white quilts will forevermore be my obsession.

This week, two of my finished red/white quilt projects were masterfully machine quilted by my master machine quilter and friend Jo.

This quilt pattern is called Bear Paw
A vintage quilt pattern that I had wanted to make for several years.
These blocks were made from red/white scrap fabrics from my red/white orphan block box.

Machine quilted with soft white thread in a continuous cat motif.
The quilting is so stinking cute!
I love it!

This red/white quilt is comprised of string pieced blocks.
The red fabrics are all scraps from previous red/white quilt projects and the white fabrics are all various shades of white to off white to tone on tone white fabrics from my stash. The machine quilting continues the diamond shape theme and it is STUNNING! I had originally planned to hand quilt this quilt but I'm so very happy I decided to have this quilt machine quilted.

I am so happy with both of these quilts.
Now to get them trimmed and bound.

For the last few years I have been making an intentional effort to use fabrics from my fabric stash before buying more fabric. I won't lie I have fallen of the "no buy fabric" wagon a few times but seeing these two quilt projects make me feel good about working through my fabric stash.

Quilt Shop Hop Tennessee

 Quilt Shop Hop Tennessee

Now that there is no longer a Joann Fabrics I hit my GPS for fabric shops nearby where ever I go. It's been a fun little adventurous exercise for me.

That being said, me and Jo, my friend and fellow quilter spent Saturday on a little quilt shop hop of quilt shops in my hometown of Crossville.

I never leave a quilt shop without a bit of red/white fabrics for future Red/White quilt projects and Saturday was no different.
Fabrics from both Mountain Top Fabrics & More and Little Blessing Quilt Shop.

One of these fabrics will be the lining for a crochet Easter Basket that I am presently working on. I haven't decided the use for the other one yet.

These Bella Solids will be for a future quilt project and some for my stash. I am trying to build my solid color fabrics stash as well.

I needed this batik to complete the binding for the Mermaid quilts.

I love fishing around in fat quarter bins ... I can always find some inspiration there.
I was drawn to these fat quarters and I just couldn't leave them behind.

Fabri shopping, then pizza at Gondola, it was a great day.

March flew by in a blur ... lots of birthdays to celebrate, a bit of sock knitting, quilting, a little doll making, watercolor painting, and spring cleaning.

Red/White Checkerboard Quilt Top

 Red/White Checkerboard Quilt Top

My obsession with red and white quilts continues.

This scrappy red/white checkerboard quilt started out as a stack of orphaned 9 patch blocks, a few fussy cut motif blocks, and two other orphan blocks I found along the way.

I love being able to incorporate orphan blocks into my scrappy quilt projects. No orphan block left behind!

First Quilt Project of 2025

 First Quilt Project of 2025

Red/White Checkerboard

Of course it is a Red/White quilt ... and a Scrap quilt
My personal favorites

I'm using up all of small red/white scraps from my red/white orphan block box. Along with a few bits here and there such as fussy cut motifs and labels from my yearly Advent Box.
I have no idea how large this quilt will end up being. I'm just going to continue on until all of the scraps have been used.

My Quilting Passion

 My Quilting Passion

Red and White Quilts

Presently, in the glow of the early morning glow, my design wall is full of all things red and white, and here I sit with no direction in which to go from here.

I'm just going to leave these blocks where they and let them inspire me.

Be inspired and passionate in what your love.

Red/White Jacob's Ladder

 Red/White Jacob's Ladder

This is a quilt pattern I have wanted to make for more than a few years. A red/white Jacob's Ladder has been on my list for awhile and finally made it to the top.

I'm working through my stash of red fabrics and this quilt project has made a small dent.

Yesterday, I spent the day in my sewing room finishing this quilt top.
7 rows of 7 blocks
84 x 84 inches

These Jacob's Ladder blocks make a beautiful pattern. I am so happy with how this quilt project turned out. It is even more stunning than I imagined that it would be.

Orphan Blocks from the Red/White Box of Curiosities

 Orphan Blocks

... from the Red/White Box of Curiosities

I just can't get enough of red/white quilts. Presently I'm on a very traditional quilt patterns path and enjoying it very much. You know I love modern quilt patterns as well but for the moment, traditional quilt patterns draw my attention. Presently I am piecing a Jacob's Ladder pattern red and white quilt. 💖

All of the blocks in the photo above are orphan blocks from various other red/white quilt projects. Flying Geese, Bear Paw, 4 Patch blocks, and half square triangles. Even a couple of the pink typewriter prints from the Bubblegum Pink quilt I made recently. This orphan block quilt top is going to take a lot of quilt math ...

The red/white 9 Patch blocks in the photo above are Leader and Ender blocks made while constructing the Jacob's Ladder quilt I am working on presently.
Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville.com is where I learned about Leader and Ender block construction.

Red/White Jacob's Ladder blocks organized and ready for piecing

49 of these 12.5 inch blocks are required to make the 84 x 84 inch Jacob's Ladder quilt top.
There will be 7 rows of 7 blocks each to construct the quilt top.

Design Wall 08/08/2024

 Design Wall

For many years I didn't have a design wall and looking back I wonder how I ever got anything accomplished. Back then any flat surface would do, table tops, the floor, or the top of the bed.

These days however I do have a design wall and I love it.

It is a place where I can play around with blocks and decide on just the right placement or design. For a quilting nerd like myself ... having a design wall provides hours and hours of entertainment! hahahaha!

There are many different elaborate and expensive design wall products out there on the market but mine is made of a queen size flannel sheet that I purchased at a yard sale years ago. I have it thumbtacked to the wall in my sewing room and it works beautifully for me.

Some blocks I found going through bags and boxes that I rescued from the storage unit that I cleaned out and the English Paper Piecing project that I am currently working on.

Some red/white half square triangles that I found and wonky star block that was in my Red/White box of curiosities.

Red/White 9 patch blocks that I made from scrap fabrics in my red/white box of curiosities. The lost and found blocks that have become SMS Quilt # 23 Half Square Triangles.

Red/White Jacob's Ladder

 Red/White Jacob's Ladder

My red/white quilt obsession continues. This time with another very traditional quilt pattern, the Jacob's Ladder.

This quilt with have 49 - 12.5 inch blocks. 7 rows of 7 blocks each. The quilt will be 84 x 84 inches when completed.

I have completed 25 of the 49 blocks that this quilt project calls for.
It's a very enjoyable quilt project.

Red / White Scrap Box

 Red/White Scrap Box

Presently, I am working on a Jacob's Ladder quilt in red and white fabrics, so my red/white scrap box if filling up pretty quickly.

This box always holds fabric scraps but presently there are several orphan blocks as well. It won't be long before I will have enough orphan blocks for another quilt.

Red/White Bear Paw Progress

Red/White Bear Paw Progress

I feel as though I have been working on this quilt project for awhile now. This past weekend I managed to get all of quilt blocks completed.

This is a scrappy red/white quilt project.
I started this project after seeing the Bear Paw block all over my social media feed. I love the look of this block. A LOT!

Now that the blocks are complelted it is down to the sashing and borders and this red/white quilt project will be complete.

In Queue

 In Queue

Like most quilters I have quilt projects in progress and quilt projects in queue.

I especially have several red/white quilt projects in queue. The red/white star quilt pictured above reminds me of the Moda LOVE pattern and is possibly the next red/white quilt in my quilt project queue. I have planned for a while to make a Jacob's Ladder quilt block pattern in red/white ... I'm not sure which one I will make first. I'm presently still working on the red/white Bear Paw scrap quilt but getting closer to finishing that project.
I love having options, I love red/white quilts, and more and more I love traditional quilt patterns.
