I'm Still Obsessed

 I'm Still Obsessed

... with Red/White Quilts ...

How it usually begins ... I'm making binding for a red/white quilt that is ready to be bound or I'm sorting through the red/white scrap box of orphan blocks.

Just 11 more blocks to go.
This pattern is called Lilac Breeze by Amanda of
WestwoodAcresFabric.com

The finished quilt size will be 56 x 74 inches

The Red fabrics are from my fabric stash and the low volume fabrics come from previous quilt kits by Amanda that I have made.

Still Obsessed

 Still Obsessed

I do believe that red/white quilts will forevermore be my obsession.

This week, two of my finished red/white quilt projects were masterfully machine quilted by my master machine quilter and friend Jo.

This quilt pattern is called Bear Paw
A vintage quilt pattern that I had wanted to make for several years.
These blocks were made from red/white scrap fabrics from my red/white orphan block box.

Machine quilted with soft white thread in a continuous cat motif.
The quilting is so stinking cute!
I love it!

This red/white quilt is comprised of string pieced blocks.
The red fabrics are all scraps from previous red/white quilt projects and the white fabrics are all various shades of white to off white to tone on tone white fabrics from my stash. The machine quilting continues the diamond shape theme and it is STUNNING! I had originally planned to hand quilt this quilt but I'm so very happy I decided to have this quilt machine quilted.

I am so happy with both of these quilts.
Now to get them trimmed and bound.

For the last few years I have been making an intentional effort to use fabrics from my fabric stash before buying more fabric. I won't lie I have fallen of the "no buy fabric" wagon a few times but seeing these two quilt projects make me feel good about working through my fabric stash.

Red/White Checkerboard Quilt Top

 Red/White Checkerboard Quilt Top

My obsession with red and white quilts continues.

This scrappy red/white checkerboard quilt started out as a stack of orphaned 9 patch blocks, a few fussy cut motif blocks, and two other orphan blocks I found along the way.

I love being able to incorporate orphan blocks into my scrappy quilt projects. No orphan block left behind!

First Quilt Project of 2025

 First Quilt Project of 2025

Red/White Checkerboard

Of course it is a Red/White quilt ... and a Scrap quilt
My personal favorites

I'm using up all of small red/white scraps from my red/white orphan block box. Along with a few bits here and there such as fussy cut motifs and labels from my yearly Advent Box.
I have no idea how large this quilt will end up being. I'm just going to continue on until all of the scraps have been used.

Design Wall 08/08/2024

 Design Wall

For many years I didn't have a design wall and looking back I wonder how I ever got anything accomplished. Back then any flat surface would do, table tops, the floor, or the top of the bed.

These days however I do have a design wall and I love it.

It is a place where I can play around with blocks and decide on just the right placement or design. For a quilting nerd like myself ... having a design wall provides hours and hours of entertainment! hahahaha!

There are many different elaborate and expensive design wall products out there on the market but mine is made of a queen size flannel sheet that I purchased at a yard sale years ago. I have it thumbtacked to the wall in my sewing room and it works beautifully for me.

Some blocks I found going through bags and boxes that I rescued from the storage unit that I cleaned out and the English Paper Piecing project that I am currently working on.

Some red/white half square triangles that I found and wonky star block that was in my Red/White box of curiosities.

Lost & Found

 Lost & Found

Recently I cleaned out a storage unit and I have come across a couple of quilt projects that I apparently started at some point and totally forgot about ...

I found these blocks in the bottom of a bag of scraps. I decided to put the half square triangles up on my design wall.

Then I decided to play around with the placement of the blocks.

I think I am going to call this one Sewing My Stash Scrap Quilt # 23
Half Square Triangles

I found these 8.5 inch string pieced blocks the first of July and after sewing the blocks together decided to call this one Sewing My Stash Scrap Quilt # 22
Strings

I'm pretty excited to see if I come across any more of these forgotten quilt projects.

Mini Quilt For A Cellphone Case

 Requests

Occasionally a family member will request a little quilty project. In this case my sister requested a mini quilt for her cellphone. She saw a reel of how to use the mini quilt in a clear cellphone cover. I made a couple for her to work with.

These little half square triangles were leftover from the Colorful Hedgehog quilt top I completed a couple of years ago.

Red / White Scrap Box

 Red/White Scrap Box

Presently, I am working on a Jacob's Ladder quilt in red and white fabrics, so my red/white scrap box if filling up pretty quickly.

This box always holds fabric scraps but presently there are several orphan blocks as well. It won't be long before I will have enough orphan blocks for another quilt.

Sewing My Stash Scrap Quilt # 22 - Strings

Sewing My Stash Scrap Quilt # 22 - Strings

As you know I recently cleaned out a storage unit, in doing so I found many sewing room treasures such as the blocks below.

I found 16, 8.5 inch string pieced blocks. Over the weekend I pieced the blocks together. The panel above is presently 32 x 32 inches. I have decided to make this an ongoing project. I plan to make blocks as I have the scraps to make them.

Scraps

 Scraps

As most of you here know I have made a scrap quilt or two. I love the concept of scrap quilts. Making something from nothing, using every last bit of fabric, and the possibilities are endless.

Recently, I spent an afternoon organizing a bag of fabric scraps from previous projects. I normally end up with strips of fabric in various sizes, below are strips of 2 inches, 2.5 inches, and 3 inches sorted and sewn end to end making a scrappy jelly roll of fabrics.

And, of course I sort the larger pieces of fabrics as well and rotate those back into my fabric stash for another project on another day.

I really enjoy organizing my fabric scraps, it is an exercise that relaxes my mind, allows me to remember previous quilt projects and ponder the possibilities for new projects.

Binding

 Binding

I have a pile of quilts that I need to put binding on. Binding a quilt is my least favorite part of the quilting process but I love when it is completed and I have a finished quilt.

All of these quilt projects are quilt tops that have been completed for at least two years. One of my goals this year is to get all of my finished quilt tops quilted and bound.

I love the machine quilting on this one and the backing is just perfect.

Sewing My Stash #15 - Easy Patchwork QAL

72 x 72 inches
I love scrap quilts and scrappy patchwork quilts are AWESOME!
And, the backing of bearded dudes makes me smile and think of my first son and child who has an awesome beard.
💙💙💙

Sewing My Stash #18 - Batiks
70 x 85 inches

This quilt is made up of all of the batiks fabric that I had on hand. When I first started quilting I absolutely loved Batiks. Batiks are still beautiful fabrics but I'm not as interested in those fabrics these days.
All the same this scrap quilt turned out nicely.

Making Something From Nothing

 Making Something From Nothing

While working on the bubblegum sonnet quilt, I'm left with half square triangle bits cut from the half square triangles needed for the quilt top. So, I decided to pieces these bits and make something out of them later on.

I'm not sure what I will make but the possibilities are endless.

Half Square Triangle bits

These little half square triangle blocks are 1 3/4 inches square.
So CUTE!

Red/White Bear Paw Progress

Red/White Bear Paw Progress

I feel as though I have been working on this quilt project for awhile now. This past weekend I managed to get all of quilt blocks completed.

This is a scrappy red/white quilt project.
I started this project after seeing the Bear Paw block all over my social media feed. I love the look of this block. A LOT!

Now that the blocks are complelted it is down to the sashing and borders and this red/white quilt project will be complete.

Red/White Bear Paw Quilt Project

 Red/White Bear Paw Quilt Project

This project seems to be the quilting project that I have landed on at the moment.

Back in my red/white fabric scrap box for this one.

This quilt block is a bit fussy. With all of the half square triangles there is a fair bit of trimming.

Lots and lots of half square triangles ... LOTS!

That being said, I love this traditional quilt block pattern.

Red / White String Pieced Quilt - Hand-Quilting Project

Red/White String Pieced Quilt

Hand-Quilting Project has begun ...

I used to do a bit more hand-quilting but piecing quilt tops is the quilting process I enjoy the most. Fortunately, I have a brilliant and wonderful friend who also is a brilliant and wonderful machine quilter. In my efforts to slow life down a bit I've decided to hand-quilt a quilt this winter. I'm learning to relax  ...  hopefully ...

Having the floor space to put the quilt "sandwich" together is a chore but when I was rearranging the living room in order to put up my Christmas tree, I took that opportunity to get my Winter 2023/2024 quilt project ready for hand-quilting.

Backing and batting ...

The pieced quilt top ...

Pin basting ... lots and lots of pins ...

Marking and framing ... and now the quilt is ready for hand-quilting ...

Here we go ... wish me luck!
